Top 7 Best Danish films released in 2013 & 2014 in cinema’s in the US and UK
In all honesty, 2013 in Danis cinema was a bit of a disappointment. You would almost think that their attention has shifted towards television a bit too much. By far the best thing coming from Denmark was Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, which was released in 2014 and is one of the most interesting films ever made. Part 1 is already released, but Part 2 is forthcoming in January 2014. Here the best new Danish films in order of year of release.
The Keeper of Lost Causes (2014)
For 2014 you mainly need to make sure you catch this Danish feature film. It is going to be the next big thing coming from Scandinavia in terms of thriller cinema. The ‘Keeper of Lost Causes’ aka ‘Kvinden I Buret’ is the first adaptation of the four books by popular Danish thriller author Jussi Adler-Olsen. It will be directed by the director of the terribly funny film ‘Klown’ (2010), Mikkel Nørgaard, and is written by the screenplay writer of the Swedish millennium trilogy, Nikolay Arcel. It is about two detectives who investigate cold cases. It has already been released in Denmark, and it seems it is the best Danish movie of 2014.
LOVE IS ALL YOU NEED – DEN SKALDEDE FRISOR – A DANISH ROMANTIC COMEDY WITH PIERCE BROSNAN | RELEASE DATE: 3 MAY 2013 (UK)
This time a light romcom by prize-winning Danish film-maker Susanne Bier. After heavy drama films like Oscar winning ‘In a Better World’ we do not mind seeing her making a little return in the romantic comedy genre. With 650.000 visitors, it was the second best watched movie in Danish cinema in 2012. It is now also scheduled to be released in the UK (19 April 2013) and in the US. Perhaps not one of the best Danish movies of 2013, but definitely a popular one. It is about a women who, while she has cancer, finds out her husband is cheating on her. She immediately decided to pack her things and head for Italy. There she stumbles into an attractive, but troubled man (Pierce Brosnan).
In 2013 Susanne Bier is also coming with an American release, the film Serena with Bradley Cooper set in North Carolina at the time of the great depression. Filming has just completed.

THE HIJACKING – KAPRINGEN BY TOBIAS LINDHOLM
A film that is already being received by the critics with open arms. A Danish thriller/action film with a heavy theme – the crew of a transport boat are hijacked by Somali pirates. After the hijacking pirates start the difficult negotiations with the Danish government. The film is directed Tobias Lindholm, the renowned writer of 2012’s blockbuster ‘Jagten’ with Mads Mikkelsen. The movie comes out next month in July 2013.
ALL FOR TWO – ALLE FOR TO – UPCOMING DANISH COMEDY | RELEASE DATE: 31 JANUARY (DENMARK)
Perhaps not the best of Danish cinema, but definitely very funny in the somewhat simple way. Not the most sophisticated of Danish humor, but definitely very accessible for the bigger international audience. It is about the classic bank job gone wrong. It is written by the talented Anders Thomas Jensen, who we love because of clever comedies like Adam’s Apples and Flickering Lights. He also writes the screenplays for the above mentioned Susanne Bier.
THE HOUR OF LYNX – I LOSSENS TIME – GREAT DANISH SUSPENSE THRILLER | RELEASE DATE: TBA
A very promising Danish thriller of 2013 with Sofia Grabol, the female detective in the hit series The Killing. The Killing has just completed its third and very exciting season, but she has apparently feels like making more thrillers. You will not hear us complain. I Lossens time is about a female priest who is approached by a scientist who begs her to help uncover the truth about what has been happening in a psychiatric ward. This new Danish film will be released in May 2013 in Denmark. No US or UK release date has been announced so far.
