Dutch movies are not to everyone’s liking. They can at times be very vulgar and blunt. They can however at the same time also be very moving and sensitive. Another obstacle might be the language which is not always very pleasant to the ears. Maybe it’s for these reasons that Dutch cinema has not been very successful abroad. Within its own borders though it is quite popular. In 2011 it turned out that Dutch movies were doing very well in Dutch theaters. For instance, the recent comedy success of ‘New Kids on the block’ and ‘Gooische Vrouwen’ have filled the cinemas everywhere around the country. Also films by producer and director Reinout Oerlemans have been very popular and have given rise to a lot of public debate.

Dutch Cinema in a Nutshell
The Dutch film industry remains relatively small with just 20 produced films a year. Also the amount of International prizes is not very significant. In the Netherlands (Holland) film history they have only won three Oscars. Respectively for the Assault (1986), Antonia (1995) and Character (1997). However, we do feel that Dutch cinema deserves a lot more than this.
Internationally there are a few actors, actresses and directors that have accumulated 
some fame. Most notably Director Paul Verhoeven who we know from Basic Instinct and Starship Troopers. But also Rutger Hauer and Jeroen Krabbe have played in some big hollywood productions. An upcoming star is actress Carice van Houten who has played in Valkyrie alongside Tom cruise, and will be featuring in the popular HBO series Game of Thrones.
