De aanslag (1986)
The Assault comes in sevent on our best Dutch Films list.
- Directed by Fons Rademakers
- Cast: Derek de Lint, Marc van Uchelen, Monique van de Ven
- IMDb Rating: 7.3
Based on the Dutch book that goes by the same title of writer Harry Mulisch. A book that almost every Dutch person has read. Either voluntarily or at school. The movie starts in the final year of the Second World War in front of the House of Anton Steenwijk. There an important collaborator of the Germans get shot. As a consequence Anton his dad and brother get arrested and almost immediatley executed. Anton carries this burden for the rest of his life, and also with the years finds out more about what actually happened that night.
The first Dutch movie to have received the Academy Award for best Foreign Language film. It also won a Golden Globe. In our opinion completely deserved. If you get the chance you should also read the book. It is amazing. Harry Mulish is one of the greatest writers of all time.
