2. Sonny Boy (2011)
Our second of best Dutch movies 2011. The heartbreaking tale of Sonny Boy. It is based on the Book that goes by the same name of Annejet van der Zijl. She in turn based it on a true story. It’s the story of Waldy (Sonny Boy), the son of a man from Suriname and a woman from the Netherlands. During the second world war his parents help hide people from the Germans. This is not without severe consequences.
The movie shows a little bit of two so very different countries. Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands, and a lot of Dutch people naturally had business there. The cultures were very different though. This films portrays this very well, but perhaps with a few too many clichés. It did, however, not shy away from exposing the racist attitude of some of the Dutchmen.
We do feel it is a very engaging and captivating movie. The ending was rather abrupt, but so be it.
Please feel free to leave reviews of the above mentioned movie. We are also very much open for other Great Dutch of 2011 suggestions.
