English Movies 2011
The Year of 2011 brought quite some impressive English Movies. Here the two very best. It was a difficult choice, but here it is.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Directed by Tomas Alfredson
Cast: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Tom Hardy
IMDb Rating: 7.6.
Thomas Alfredson (Let The Right one in) has truly made a great film with this one. Just at the end of the year 2011 he squeezed this one in. During the Cold War George Smiley, an espionage expert, has to come back from retirement to uncover a soviet Spy who has infiltrated M16.
The film is not another spy movie a la ‘James Bond’ with car chases and unlikely shootings, but a more nuanced and subtle depiction of the world of Espionage. An amazing cast with equally great performances. Gary Oldman is truly magnificent.
Submarine (2011)
Directed by Richard Ayoade
Cast: Craig Roberts, Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine
IMDb Rating: 7.3.
Perhaps not as known as the other one, but in our view it was an amazing movie. The Director Ayoade is famous for his Arctic Monkey video clips (the frontman of the Arctic Monkey also has a song on the soundtrack) We were very pleasantly surprised. The movie sometimes borders on forced quirkyness, but it pulls it off wonderfully. The little jokes really remarkably. It is about a young boy who is struggling with his parents potentially divorcing, while he also wants like any other boy to lose his virginity. funny. Really one of the best English Movies of 2011, and even of the last decade.
Our other best English Movies 2011:
Tyrannosaur (2011)
A great debut-film of Paddy Considine. Huge success at the Sundance Festival. A film about two troubled people brought together by fate.
Kill List (2011)
The New film by Ben Wheatley about two hitmen caught up in a conspiracy.
