Although technically Finland is part of Scandinavia, many Scandinavian people seem to disagree. Finland is a little bit the odd one out. The Swedes, Danes and Norwegians can understand each other a little. The Finnish language is from a different planet. In Finland you can sense a Russian influence, and this is also why it is such an interesting country. It has a high percentage of alcoholism and suicide, and this is also reflected in the Finnish Movies. The Finnish films often portray the somewhat cold and sad state of mind. The Swedish and Danish coziness, intimacy and romance is not so much present in Finnish Movies.

Finnish Movies in the last decades

The Finnish cinema can count on the support of its own population. Within its border Finnish films are immensely popular. They score very well in comparison to foreign movies. That is very fortunate, as there is not yet an international distribution on a big scale. Nevertheless, Finland has had its share of success abroad. Most fame it has gained in the person of Aki Kaurismaki. He  pops up in this top 5 two times. His films mainly take place in Helsinki, but the city is never put in to a romantic perspective. Even more so, his characters frequently talk about leaving Finland someday. His film ‘The Man Without a Past’ was nominated for the Oscar of best foreign film. The lights in the Dusk (2006) received a nomination. Kaurismaki refused to accept the nomination in protest against George Bush’s foreign policy. We hope you will rate the movies. Also feel free to leave a review!
