Here is our selection of the greatest Italian movies for the year 2012. Some are already out, others are about to be released this year. The best Italian movies of Italian cinema in 2012. It proves to be a very good film year for Italy. The release dates are when they come out in Italy. Trailers shall follow as soon as they are out.

Venuto El Mondo – Into the World

Cast: Penélope Cruz, Emile Hirsch and Mira Furlan

This Drama film by actor, but now director Sergio Castelitto is starring Penelope Cruz sets in Sarajevo. It’s about a single mother who takes her son to Bosnia and shows him where her father died in the Former Yugoslavia – Bosnia wars.

Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci
Cast: Tea Falco, Jacopo Olmo Antinori and Veronica Lazar

The Great Italian filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci returns 10 years since his last motion picture. We know him from the all-time Italian classics Novecento, Il Conformista and so many more. Now he made a movie about a very introvert young teenager who spends all his time in a basement while his parents think he is on a skiing trip.

Big House
Directed by Matteo Garrone
Cast: Claudia Gerini, Ciro Petrone and Nunzia Schiano
Release Date: 2012 – to be determined
The follow-up to the instant Italian success Gomorrah. We were very impressed by this great film of 2008, and cannot wait to see his next film. It is currently in post-production but is scheduled to be released in 2012. It revolves around a family obsessed with reality tv. They await their father being picked for a spot on the Italian Big Brother show.

Thanks so much for this, I’m an american and really want to be exposed to more European films, even though I don’t know the language the cienmatic langue speaks volumes to me. Just wanted to let you know I was looking up the movie Big House by Garrone and found it’s now titled “Reality”.
