Top 12 best Italian movies up to 2015

In 2013 Grande Belezza made sure that the world is once again watching Italy when it comes to quality cinema. But Sorrentino is not the only Italian filmmaker out there that deserver our attention. In recent years Nanni Moretti, Matteo Garrone, Marco Belocchio have proven that art houses should also be displaying their films. Luck has it that in 2015 all these filmmaker are coming with new titles, including Paolo Sorrentino.

In the Future (2015) by Paolo Sorrentino

Sorrentino is returning with a new project this year. And he is returning to his English language cinema ways, in line with previous films like This Must be the Place with Sean Penn. In the Future (Italian title:La giovinezza ), starring Michael Caine and Rachel Weisz, is about two old friends vacationing in the Alps. One of them is a retired conductor, but someone wants at all costs to hear him conduct again.

The Tale of Tales (2015) by Matteo Garrone

That other film festival darling, Matteo Garrone, is also leaving Italian language cinema behind and goes for an English language title this year. Still most famous for Gomorra, the director now takes on the book “Tale of Tales” by Giambattista Basile, the famous author of 17th century Neapolitan tales, and intends to turn it into a film. The film is scheduled for release in Italy in May 2015.

L’ultimo Vampiro by Marco Bellocchio

Another new vampire film is coming our way. And for some reason it feels like the Italian language and vampires go together swimmingly. I am not quite sure if it actually will be about vampires though. More on this as soon as we know more.

Margherita (2015) by Nanni Moretti

Italian actor and director is coming with ‘Margherita’ aka Mia ‘Madre’ in 2015, a drama film featuring Margherita Buy. Not much is known yet, but we are very interested.

Yet another Italian comedy for 2014. This one, ‘The Pretor’ is based on the the novel ‘Il Pretore di Cuvio’ by the famous Italian author Piero Chiara. It is directed by Giulio Base who is mainly known for the popular Italian detective series ‘Don Matteo’ (2004-2011).

The big Italian director of the moment, Sorrentino, is filming a series of short films taking place in Brazil in Rio eu te Amo (2014)

Reality (2013) – A great new comedy drama by the director of the acclaimed Italian film ‘Gomorra’

Matteo Garrone’s first film after the huge success of the Italian Mafia/Gangster movie ‘Gomorra’ in 2008. It has already won the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Festival. It will premiere in the UK on 22 March 2013. Not as great as Gomorrah, but I have high hopes for his above mentioned 2015 film The Tale of Tales.

Io e te (2012)

After nine years the excellent and famous Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci (From great classic Italian movies like ‘The Last Emperor and Il Conformista’) is back with Me and You (Io e te). It was released in October in Italy, but in most European countries it will be displayed in cinema’s around February. It is a lovely Italian romantic movie – a drama about a young guy who tells his parents he is on a skiing trip, but actually stays at home in the basement. Naturally, there is also a beautiful Italian girl involved.

La Migliore Offerta (2013) – Great new romantic movie by  Sicilian Guiseppe Tornatore

From the director responsible for our number 1 top European (and Italian) movie ‘Cinema Paradiso’. A new Italian romantic movie about  an eccentric art auctioneer, and his obsession with a rich heiress & collector. It has already been released on 1 January 2013 and was received very well. It looks very much like an American production – this is no surprise as it is a Warner Bros production with an International cast, like Australian Geoffrey Rush (A King’s Speech).

La Grande Belezza (2013) – Another one of the new Italian comedy films in 2013

La Grande Belezza will be released in Italian cinema on 11 April 2013. It is a new Italian movie by the talented modern Italian film-maker Paolo Sorrentino, who besides being one of the Judges at the Cannes Film festival in 2012, is famous for great political movies like ‘Il Divo’ and also for his international film ‘This Must be the Place’ (2011) with American actor Sean Penn. La Grande Belezza is about ‘a journalist who bitterly recollects his passionate, lost youth’. It shows a great portrait of modern-day Rome. We will update this with a trailer as soon as it comes out.
