Nutshell – quickly introducing you

Most people in Europa are, without realising it, already acquainted with Swedish movies. In our childhood we have all thoroughly enjoyed the amazing Swedish children’s movies and series. Children’s films like ‘Ronia the Robber’s Daughter’ (1984) and ‘the Brothers Lionheart’ (1977) oozed a certain warmth, coziness and realness, which all Europeans embraced. And in a sense, Swedish movies for grown-ups are not so much different. Although of course dealing with more serious matters, they also provide authenticity and intimacy. Even Swedish crime series like ‘Wallander’, an immensely popular series, manage to engage people on a very personal level. Perhaps it is because they are less over-produced than most American movies and series, that they feel more real and compelling.

The Face of the Swedish Cinema is of course Ingmar Bergman, who Ingmar Bergman - A great Swedish Filmmakerpassed away in 2007. His movies have put Swedish cinema on the map. It has been quite a while since he has made his last movie, but his cinematography is still widely studied by upcoming new directors. Also in more recent years the Swedish Film industry has accumulated quite some success. With films like ‘As it is in Heaven’ Kay Pollak has caught the international film watcher’s eye, and has also been nominated for an Oscar. Of course, we can not forget about the Millennium Trilogy, based on the books of Stieg Larsson, which has created a true hype in Europe.
