In Sweden, just after the turning of the century amidst social change, wars and chaos, Maria wins a camera in a raffle. Maria is a young lady, belonging to the poor working class. Even though her life through the years, with six children and a violent husband, is not very easy, she gets a lot of strength and joy from her camera, which helps her see the world.
The film has captured the feel of the beginning of the century tremendously well. The power of Maria is truly inspiring, especially considering it is based on the memories of an existing person. Although the film was nominated but did not win an Oscar, it has won a Golden Globe.
