At the start of the twentieth century, the children of a local director and actress grow up in a Swedish City. When the father dies prematurely, the mother marries the local Bishop. Although very much against their wishes, the children are forced to move in with the Bishop in his dark and austere chancellery. It is here that a lot of dramatic happenings shall take place.
It is actually one of the last truly great films he directed. The films are awarded with a staggering four Oscars, among them an Oscar for the best Foreign-Language film and an Oscar for best Director. It is one of the most powerful and breathtaking films of all time.
